Distinguished Entrepreneurs, Arbitrators, Lawyers and Consultants

Arbitration is an alternative dispute resolution method for businesses that is developing exponentially.

One of the demands of the companies that turn to arbitration is that there should be centres that are specialized in administering arbitral processes that are highly efficient and provide modern premises and excellent support services, with Arbitration Rules that are aligned with the best international practices and that work with upright, specialized, avaliable and competent arbitrators.

Throughout thirty years of existence, all of the above has been achieved by the Commercial Arbitration Centre of the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Due to the immense work of my predecessor, their teams and the Arbitration Centre’s staff, whom I here salute, the CAC-PCCI is nowadays recognized by the business community and the arbitral community as the most renowned portuguese arbitration centre and as being at the level of the best international centres.

Only through a critical mass of proceedings and constant study has it been possible to make this leap in quality that is now widely recognized and which offers a high level of confidence to all who work in arbitration.

The goals for the current term will be to maintain and perfect the quality of the services provided by the Centre, to defend the integrity of the arbitrators, to relentlessly promote a culture of independence and impartiality in all arbitrators throughout the entire proceedings; to institucionalize arbitration by bringing as many arbitrators as possible under the administration of this institution, as it is the safest, most efficient and least expensive option; to internationalize this institution, with particular attention to portuguese-speaking countries.

There is no reason why Portugal should not be a renowned centre for international arbitrations nor why this Centre, over which I have the honour to preside, should not undertake a central role in that area. Smaller countries than Portugal have managed to achieve international acclaim. We will do everything, alongside other peer institutions, so that Portugal may move forward in this regard.
